"My kid is 2 years old....they aren't talking much! Do they need a speech eval?"

What should you do if you are concerned?

  1. Look at a "communication milestones" chart put out by a reputable source. Here's one I love from ASHA, the national Speech Language and Hearing organization. Click the different age ranges to read what skills are generally expected at those ages.

My general rule of thumb is around one year old your child should start saying their first meaningful word. He or she should have around 50 different words (signs count!) at two and begin combining them into two-word phrases. By three most people should be able to understand what your child is saying.

  2. Talk to your doctor if you haven't already. They may recommend to "wait and see". This may or may not be the right choice! Go with your gut and the info above.

  3. Contact a local SLP or your local early intervention program.

    1. Kids from birth to three are eligible for a free evaluation and free therapy AND you can self-refer. I worked for a state early intervention program for several years and think it's wonderful! Some may offer free screenings.

    2. Contact a local private practice SLP! I'm happy to talk with you (and I'm sure my colleagues are as well) to see if an evaluation is the next right step. The SLP may require a referral from a physician to proceed.

When in doubt, reach out! Us SLPs got into this profession to help others and EARLY INTERVENTION is KEY for improvement.
